Barrel racing is just that - a race against time, around an obstacle course made up of three barrels in the
arena set in a premeasured triangular shape. A rider can choose to begin the cloverleaf pattern to the right or left.
The time begins when the horse and rider cross the predetermined start line and stops when they come back across the same line.
Each run is timed to the hundredths of a second - making every move count.
The closer the horse circles
the barrels, the faster the time - but the riskier the run, because proximity makes it more likely that either horse or rider will
knock over a barrel. Although either horse or rider can touch a barrel, they will be assessed a five-second penalty for each
barrel they knock over.
